That duality was evident from the very first encounter between the Spaniards, led by <strong>Francisco Pizarro, and Atahualpa<\/strong>, the \u201cSon of the Sun\u201d, who shone with pride after his victory in the <a href=\"https:\/\/historiaperuana.pe\/periodo-autoctono\/guerra-civil-huascar-atahualpa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">fratricidal war<\/a> against his brother Hu\u00e1scar for control of the empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 16 November 1532, when <strong>Atahualpa came to meet the Iberians<\/strong> in what is now the Plaza de Armas of Cajamarca, a city in the northern highlands of Peru, the first to approach him was the <a href=\"https:\/\/entre-dos-mundos--interpretes-y-evangelizacion-en-el-peru-colon.webnode.com.co\/l\/fray-vicente-de-valverde\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dominican friar Vicente de Valverde<\/a>. This \u201cman of God\u201d <strong>carried a cross and a Bible<\/strong>, demanding that the <a href=\"https:\/\/simple.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sapa_Inca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sapa Inca<\/a> <strong>abandon his pagan beliefs<\/strong> and accept the authority of the Spanish Crown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The friar handed him the Bible. <strong>Atahualpa threw it aside<\/strong>\u2014perhaps out of disdain, perhaps out of fear. That reaction became the reason, or perhaps the excuse, that triggered the attack by the Europeans and <strong>the capture of the so-called idolater<\/strong>. The use of <a href=\"https:\/\/ejercitodeflandes.blogspot.com\/2009\/11\/arcabuz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">arquebuses<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artetormentaria.es\/2010\/03\/falconete.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">falconets<\/a>, along with the thunder of galloping horses\u2014animals unknown in these lands\u2014made the task easier against the astonished guards of the Andean ruler. <strong>They were left completely paralysed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC2670-1024x683.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC2670-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC2670-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC2670-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC2670-1536x1024.webp 1536w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC2670-2048x1365.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the first link in a chain of historical events that would end with the <a href=\"https:\/\/historia.nationalgeographic.com.es\/a\/la-ejecucion-del-lider-inca-atahualpa-traicion-y-muerte_18932\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">execution of the Inc<\/a>a and<strong> the destruction of his empire<\/strong>. The \u201cSon of the Sun\u201d gained nothing from trying to \u201cbuy\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/peru\/2024\/06\/19\/atahualpa-y-el-oro-del-rescate-que-hicieron-con-lo-que-pago-con-su-libertad-y-lo-valdria-en-la-actualidad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">his freedom with vast amounts of gold and silver<\/a>. He was deceived. His fate was sealed. On 26 July 1533, <strong>he was strangled\u2014accused of idolatry, fratricide and conspiracy<\/strong>\u2014in the very same square where he had been captured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The sword and the cross shaped the destiny<\/strong> of what is now Peru. The \u201csword\u201d suppressed, for nearly three centuries<strong>, all attempts to return to the old order<\/strong> as well as any efforts to create a new one; while <strong>the \u201ccross\u201d imposed itself upon the <\/strong><em><strong>huacas<\/strong> <\/em>(temples), where people had once worshipped Inti (the Sun) and Killa (the Moon), Pachamama (Mother Earth) and Illapa (the god of thunder), among other pre-Hispanic deities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A country of faith<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0061-1024x683.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0061-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0061-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0061-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0061-1536x1024.webp 1536w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0061-2048x1365.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>With the cross and the Bible<\/strong>, priests began to <strong>spread the Gospel of Christ throughout the Andean world<\/strong>. It was neither an easy task nor an entirely holy one. Be that as it may, those words took root in <strong>the hearts of men and women<\/strong>, so much so that Article 50 of the Constitution recognises <strong>the Catholic Church<\/strong> as \u201can<strong> important element in the historical<\/strong>, cultural and moral formation of Peru\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A country that believes and prays<\/strong>, that <strong>makes offerings and celebrates the saints<\/strong> and miraculous virgins enshrined on church altars. At times, <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/celebrate-peru-from-inti-raymi-to-the-feast-of-saint-peter\/\">the fervour of the faithful<\/a> can be rather excessive, and more than one priest takes the opportunity during Mass to ask them to \u201c<strong>ease off a bit on the drinking and dancing<\/strong>\u201d, as wandering about tipsy is hardly pleasing to the Almighty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, it\u2019s well known that quite <strong>a few priests enthusiastically join in the dancing and the toasts<\/strong>. Oh dear\u2014I probably shouldn\u2019t have written that. After all, <strong>God forgives sin, but not scandal<\/strong>. Nor does He forgive writers who, being a bit absent-minded, fail to explain that these references to the sword, the cross and <a href=\"https:\/\/historiaperuana.pe\/periodo-colonial\/virreinato\/evangelizacion-en-el-virreinato\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">evangelisation<\/a> are simply the prelude to a text about the celebrations of <strong>Holy Week in Peru<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0324-1024x681.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0324-1024x681.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0324-300x199.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0324-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0324-550x365.webp 550w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0324.webp 1504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, celebrations in the plural\u2014because in a predominantly Catholic country, where <strong>faith takes on different shades<\/strong> in each region, the remembrance of <strong>the life, passion, death and resurrection <\/strong>of Jesus Christ becomes an event that goes far beyond the religious sphere. In these globalised times, <strong>Holy Week is also a cultural and tourist occasion<\/strong> which, thanks to its deep significance, <strong>captures the attention even of those who do not believe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Religious tourism during the holy days<\/strong>. With <a href=\"https:\/\/elcomercio.pe\/opinion\/columnistas\/semana-santa-cristo-el-peruanisimo-sermon-de-las-tres-horas-por-adolfo-bazan-coquis-noticia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">three-hour Masses<\/a> and sermons, visits to seven churches, and enactments of the Stations of the Cross; with processions of sacred images and carpets of <strong>flowers covering the ground<\/strong> in villages or the streets of cities; and even with delicious special dishes and traditional <strong>colonial sweets prepared in convents.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A rosary of churches<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC7882-1024x683.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3748\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC7882-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC7882-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC7882-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC7882-1536x1024.webp 1536w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC7882-2048x1365.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Churches and convents\u2014<strong>many colonial churches and convents<\/strong>\u2014fill the historic centres of Lima, <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/cusco-plaza-de-armas-historical-center\/\">Cusco<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/arequipa-route-of-the-sillar\/\">Arequipa<\/a>, Ayacucho and Huancavelica, to name just a few cities in Peru. <strong>Faith extends into towns and communities<\/strong> as well, where imposing churches in Baroque, Neoclassical or Renaissance styles still stand. Inside, they house <strong>valuable works of religious art<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holy Week is an ideal time to visit these \u201chouses of God\u201d, built by noble families with the rather <strong>\u201cselfless\u201d aim of securing their eternal salvation<\/strong>. Tradition has it that on <strong>Maundy Thursday<\/strong>, believers visit seven churches, symbolising the key moments in Christ\u2019s journey from the Last Supper to <strong>his death on the cross.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This tradition is easy to follow in <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/en\/lima-exploring-seafood-gastronomy\/\">Lima<\/a>\u2019s historic centre. With little effort, you can reach the Cathedral, which dates back to 1535; <strong>San Francisco, a stronghold of colonial art<\/strong>; Las Nazarenas, the \u201chome\u201d of the <a href=\"https:\/\/educacioncontinua.pucp.edu.pe\/blog\/el-senor-de-los-milagros-tradicion-cultural-y-reflexion-teologica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lord of Miracles<\/a>; San Pedro, with its Baroque fa\u00e7ade; La Merced,<strong> where Saint Martin de Porres was baptised<\/strong>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conventosantodomingo.com.pe\/historia-del-convento\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Santo Domingo<\/a>, which<strong> holds the relics of three saints<\/strong>; and Santa Rosa, built on the site of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dominicos.org\/quienes-somos\/grandes-figuras\/santa-rosa-de-lima\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lima saint<\/a>\u2019s former home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0527-1024x680.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3737\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0527-1024x680.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0527-300x199.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0527-768x510.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0527-1536x1020.webp 1536w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0527-2048x1360.webp 2048w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC0527-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same can be seen in Cusco, with its <strong>churches built upon Inca palaces and temples<\/strong>; in Arequipa, where sillar\u2014<strong>a volcanic stone\u2014is widely used<\/strong>; and in <strong>Ayacucho, known as the \u201cCity of the 37 colonial churches<\/strong>\u201d. Located 560 km southeast of Lima, this city\u2014whose name can be interpreted as the \u201c<strong>dwelling of the soul<\/strong>\u201d\u2014becomes the most visited destination for both Peruvians and international travellers during <strong>Holy Week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vast <strong>processions, filled with devoted worshippers dressed in mourning<\/strong> and moved to tears; the grand platforms carrying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/peru\/2025\/04\/18\/esta-es-el-anda-mas-grande-y-pesada-del-peru-cientos-de-fieles-la-cargan-el-domingo-de-resurreccion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Risen Christ<\/a>, illuminated by thousands of candles (around 5,000) that light up the dawn on Sunday; the presence of <strong>Andean symbols within the religious ceremonies<\/strong>; and even the <a href=\"https:\/\/foodandwineespanol.com\/gastronomia\/recetario\/visitas-ayacucho-esta-semana-santa-no-te-pierdas-estos-dulces-tipicos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">traditional sweets<\/a> prepared in the convents of Santa Teresa and Santa Clara\u2014all combine to make this one of <strong>the most spectacular celebrations in the Catholic world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Holy Week Getaways<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0284-1024x681.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0284-1024x681.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0284-300x199.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0284-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0284-550x365.webp 550w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC_0284.webp 1504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ayacucho\u2019s celebration is <strong>not the only memorable Holy Week<\/strong>. Just as the churches and processions are not the only attractions in this city, where visiting the <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=1125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Wari Archaeological Complex<\/a>, the capital of the <a href=\"https:\/\/andina.pe\/agencia\/noticia-jose-ochatoma-wari-fue-primer-imperio-andino-peru-y-es-abuelo-los-incas-982349.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">first Andean empire<\/a>, is almost a must. So, in between prayers and moments of devotion, you\u2019ll have a wonderful time in the region where <a href=\"https:\/\/bicentenario.gob.pe\/batalla-de-ayacucho-hito-en-la-consolidacion-de-la-independencia-americana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the final battle<\/a> for the <strong>independence of the Americas<\/strong> was fought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will you stay in Lima or travel to Ayacucho (2,760 m above sea level \/ 10 hours by coach \/ 1 hour by plane)? <strong>Perhaps you\u2019d prefer other options<\/strong>. And yes, there certainly are. One of them is Tarma, in the Jun\u00edn region. Known as the \u201c<strong>Pearl of the Andes<\/strong>\u201d (3,050 m above sea level), it becomes especially charming during Holy Week,<strong> when devoted locals from both the countryside and the town<\/strong> gather in the Plaza de Armas and its surroundings to carry out a very special mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>They create colourful and artistic carpets<\/strong> using the petals of flowers grown in the nearby fields. There are so many, and they are so beautiful, that simply <strong>looking at them lifts the spirit<\/strong>. The designs, whose edges are highlighted with coffee beans, are not exclusively religious. You\u2019ll also find <strong>scenes of rural life<\/strong> and patterns that recall <a href=\"https:\/\/huacasdelperu.org.pe\/tarmatambo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the pre-Hispanic past<\/a> of this city in central Peru (7 hours by coach from Lima).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC1256-1024x683.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3741\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC1256-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC1256-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC1256-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC1256-1536x1024.webp 1536w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DSC1256-2048x1365.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re looking for something more intense and vivid, <strong>take part in the Stations of the Cross held on Good Friday in Huancavelica<\/strong>, the capital of the region of the same name. The re-enactment begins in the atrium of the Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas.
