In summer, the people of Lima\u2014not all of them, but certainly many\u2014defy the compass which<\/strong>, as we know, always points towards magnetic north. When the sun begins to blaze over the Peruvian capital, thousands\u2014hundreds of thousands\u2014of its residents \u201cescape\u201d along the Pan-American Highway towards the seaside resorts of the south<\/strong>, where they spread out happily on the sand before or after a memorable swim in the waters of the Pacific.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breaking the routine. Leaving the metropolis behind. Meeting the sea<\/strong>. Enjoying the sunshine\u2014that elusive sunshine, that absent sunshine, the sunshine that is so deeply missed for much of the year. Lima is grey and misty in autumn<\/strong>, in winter, and even a little in spring. So much so that the writer and humourist H\u00e9ctor Velarde once joked that its sky has the colour of a donkey\u2019s belly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The phrase is quite accurate\u2014except from December to March, when the sky clears and brightens<\/strong>. During these months the temperature rises, the heat becomes intense, and the coastline turns into a truly irresistible temptation<\/strong>. After all, one of the great advantages of the \u201cCity of Kings\u201d is its closeness to the sea. It is well known that this was one of the reasons behind its Spanish foundation<\/a> on 18 January 1535.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it\u2019s not as if the conquistador Francisco Pizarro<\/a> chose the site simply because he fancied spending his summers enjoying the rather chilly waters of Lima\u2019s bay. Perhaps he did at some point \u2014 I can\u2019t say for sure. What I do know is that his decision was indeed influenced by the Pacific Ocean<\/strong>. Proof of this is that Callao<\/a> \u2014 the capital\u2019s neighbouring city \u2014 would go on to become the main port of the Viceroyalty of Peru and, in fact, of all South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seen this way, it\u2019s no exaggeration to say that Lima is the capital of Peru thanks to the sea<\/strong>. The very same sea that looks spectacular from the cliffs of San Isidro, Miraflores, Barranco and Chorrillos. The same sea you can enjoy along the Costa Verde<\/strong>, the seaside stretch of beaches just a short distance from the Historic Centre of Lima. And the same sea that draws many holidaymakers southwards<\/strong> \u2014 openly defying the compass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m sorry, Mr Francisco Pizarro \u2014 I\u2019m going to mention you once again. I do so for the sake of historical accuracy and to avoid any confusion. After all, we wouldn\u2019t want anyone to think that when you arrived at Lima\u2019s bay you were greeted by a string of Caribbean-looking beaches<\/strong>. Quite the opposite. I can imagine your surprise when you realised that the Pacific had hardly any shores at all<\/strong> \u2014 or only very narrow ones \u2014 thanks to a curtain of enormous cliffs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These rugged coastal giants rise to nearly 100 metres in height<\/strong> and, because of their steep faces and lack of vegetation, they are almost impossible to scale<\/strong>. Their presence once made it difficult to make full use of the bay. The situation would change in 1970 with the inauguration of the Costa Verde<\/a>, an urban development project that reclaimed space from the cliffs to create a string of beaches and a paved coastal road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, the circuit continued to grow and evolve, becoming a lively public space where all sorts of activities take place. It\u2019s not only about quick dips in the sea or lazy naps by the shore<\/strong>. Surfing lessons are held here, people cycle and jog while enjoying the sea breeze, and \u2014 well \u2014 since Lima, the famous City of the Kings, is renowned for its gastronomy<\/a>, you\u2019ll also find more than one restaurant along its beaches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And although the Costa Verde is attractive all year round, in summer it bursts into colour and activity. A friendly tip: if crowds aren\u2019t your thing, don\u2019t even think about visiting Playa Agua Dulce, the city\u2019s most popular beach. But if you\u2019d like to experience the vibrant pulse of Lima\u2019s multicultural and down-to-earth side<\/strong>, come on a sunny Sunday. I\u2019m quite sure it will leave you wide-eyed with amazement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve been warned. Now then, if you prefer a little more peace and quiet, try to avoid \u201cheading down\u201d to Lima\u2019s Pacific beaches at the weekend<\/strong>. From Monday to Friday the number of bathers drops considerably. If you have a car \u2014 or rent one \u2014 it\u2019s a great idea to drive along the entire Costa Verde<\/strong>, which nowadays begins in La Punta<\/strong>, in the Callao Province, and ends in Chorrillos<\/strong>. Along the way it passes through the districts of San Miguel, Magdalena del Mar, San Isidro and Miraflores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the north or to the south<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before I explain the open contradiction to the compass that I mentioned earlier, let me tell you that among the beaches of the Costa Verde a few stand out in particular. There\u2019s Playa La Herradura<\/a> in Chorrillos \u2014 ideal for riding the waves and then grabbing a bite in its seaside restaurants. Then there\u2019s Playa Los Yuyos in Barranco<\/strong> \u2014 perfect for enjoying its calm waters. And in Miraflores you\u2019ll find Playa Waikiki, Playa Redondo and Playa Makaha<\/strong> \u2014 all very easy to reach and especially appealing if you enjoy surfing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it\u2019s time to say goodbye to the Costa Verde<\/strong>, because there\u2019s far more ocean and many more shores waiting to be discovered<\/strong>. It\u2019s time to set off towards the seaside districts on the outskirts of the metropolis. These lie both to the north and to the south<\/strong> and can be reached via the Pan-American Highway. In fact, the summer routes stretch even further, reaching several sun-and-sand destinations<\/strong> in the provinces of the Lima Region<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let me explain this point \u2014 or at least try to \u2014 to avoid any confusion. Lima is the capital of Peru<\/strong> and a vast metropolis made up of 43 districts. At the same time, however, Lima is also a region (or department)<\/strong> that includes nine provinces. Two of them \u2014 Ca\u00f1ete<\/a> Province to the south and Huaral<\/a> Province to the north \u2014 lie along the coast and border the city. That\u2019s why many holidaymakers end up \u201ccrossing\u201d provincial boundaries in search of those inviting coastal escapes. \ud83c\udf0a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I admit it\u2019s quite a tangle<\/strong>. It\u2019s not my fault \u2014 I didn\u2019t draw Peru\u2019s political boundaries. Enough of that. Let\u2019s get back to summer matters. It\u2019s the weekend. Where should you go \u2014 north or south?<\/strong> For the people of Lima the answer is usually clear: south, and very much to the south<\/strong>. \u201cThe beaches are cooler,\u201d \u201cthe waves are great,\u201d and \u201cthere\u2019s loads of fun to be had\u201d<\/strong> are the main reasons you\u2019ll hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, it\u2019s a matter of taste, because the north has its charms too.<\/strong> If you feel like following the compass, visit Anc\u00f3n<\/a>, which in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was the most exclusive seaside resort in the country. Today, part of that brilliant past can still be seen. Other options include Chacra and Mar<\/a>, Puerto Chancay and Playa Chorrillos<\/a> de Chancay, all located in Huaral Province (around 75 km from Lima along the Pan-American Highway North).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer in the south of Lima. Summer at Playa El Silencio<\/strong> (km 38), where families enjoy themselves on the white sand and in its calm waters; Punta Hermosa<\/strong> (km 42), known for its good waves and lively crowd of young beachgoers; Santa Mar\u00eda del Mar<\/strong> (km 50), exclusive and elegant; San Bartolo<\/strong> (km 51), a traditional and peaceful seaside resort; and Pucusana<\/strong> (km 57), a vibrant bay where artisanal fishermen share the shore with excellent seafood restaurants.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of them can be reached via the Pan-American Highway South, and you don\u2019t necessarily need a car to visit them<\/strong>. Public transport makes getting there fairly easy<\/strong> and, thanks to their proximity, it\u2019s perfectly possible to go and return on the same day<\/strong>. The beaches mentioned here are just a few examples. There are many more along the metropolitan coast and plenty more in Ca\u00f1ete Province, where you\u2019ll find Asia<\/a> \u2014 perhaps the ultimate expression of Lima\u2019s summer lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A little look back: towards the end of the 20th century, the coastal desert began to transform<\/strong> around kilometre 100 of the highway. Where there had once been nothing but sand and solitude, gated communities with luxurious houses overlooking a previously ignored sea began to appear<\/strong>. That was when the name of Asia District<\/strong> \u2014 once a modest district of fishermen and farmers in Ca\u00f1ete<\/strong> \u2014 became synonymous with sun, sea and summer fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un anhelo que se hizo a\u00fan mayor al inaugurarse el Sur Plaza Boulevard<\/a>, un centro comercial con lo mejor de la moda, la gastronom\u00eda, el cine y el entretenimiento nocturno en sus bares y discotecas<\/strong>. El oc\u00e9ano ya no era el \u00fanico atractivo. De d\u00eda y de noche se pod\u00eda pasarla<\/strong> bien<\/strong> sin alejarse demasiado de la metr\u00f3poli. Un destino perfecto para evadirse de las tensiones urbanas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El mar lime\u00f1o te espera<\/strong>. \u00a1Vis\u00edtalo! No es el Caribe, pero tiene su propio encanto<\/strong>. Te dar\u00e1s cuenta al ver los acantilados de la Costa Verde y la grandeza de un desierto que se \u201crefresca\u201d en las aguas oce\u00e1nicas<\/a>. Ese encuentro diferencia al litoral de la \u00fanica capital sudamericana con playas y balnearios<\/strong> al norte y al sur de su coraz\u00f3n urbano. T\u00fa eliges si sigues a la br\u00fajula o la contradices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asia \u2014 everyone wanted to go to Asia<\/strong>. The desire grew even stronger with the opening of the Sur Plaza Boulevard<\/a>, a seaside shopping and entertainment complex offering the best in fashion, gastronomy, cinema and nightlife<\/strong>, with its lively bars and discotheques<\/strong>. The ocean was no longer the only attraction. Day or night, you could have a great time without travelling too far from the metropolis<\/strong> \u2014 a perfect escape from the stresses of urban life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sea of Lima is waiting for you<\/strong>. Come and visit! It may not be the Caribbean<\/strong>, but it has a charm all of its own. You\u2019ll notice it when you see the dramatic cliffs of the Costa Verde and the vastness of a desert that seems to \u201ccool itself\u201d in the ocean\u2019s waters<\/a>. That meeting of desert and sea sets apart the coastline of the only South American capital with beaches and seaside resorts<\/strong> both to the north and to the south of its urban heart.
