\u201cEverything under the sun<\/strong>\u201d is a phrase that perfectly sums up the travel experience waiting for you in Lima, the metropolis founded on 18 January 1535<\/a> under the name \u201cCiudad de los Reyes<\/strong>\u201d (City of Kings). It\u2019s no exaggeration \u2014 nor over-enthusiasm \u2014 to say that in the Peruvian capital, the only one in South America that both faces and embraces the waters of the Pacific Ocean<\/strong>, you\u2019ll be amazed by what you see and experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Lima, there is history, culture and tradition. In Lima, you eat wonderfully<\/a> and celebrate life with real flair. In Lima, you explore both past and present<\/strong>. In Lima, you feel the Andean spirit<\/strong>, the Spanish heritage, the mestizo roots and the cosmopolitan energy. You\u2019ll discover all of this as you wander through the neighbourhoods of a city that is a true snapshot of Peru<\/strong> \u2014 walking streets you\u2019ll grow to love, and perhaps, just occasionally, only now and then, feel a tiny bit frustrated by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s no such thing as a perfect destination. In my capital, you\u2019ll find both the good and the not-so-good<\/strong>. Enjoy the first; steer clear of the second. Stay alert. Keep your eyes open<\/strong>. Be sensible and, as we Lime\u00f1os say, never make yourself an easy target. Avoid the \u201cspicy\u201d (unsafe) neighbourhoods<\/strong>, use app-based taxis to get around, keep a close eye on your belongings, and carry only what you truly need<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warning has been given. I\u2019m being completely honest \u2014 I\u2019ve no intention of sweeping anything under the carpet. And when I said that in Lima you\u2019ll find a bit of everything, that \u201ceverything\u201d also included the darker side<\/strong> of the \u201cThree Times Crowned City\u201d. That said \u2014 and this must be said too \u2014 it does not overshadow the charm of its Historic Centre<\/strong>, nor does it lessen the exquisite flavours<\/a> of its restaurants or the freshness of its beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ah, and it certainly doesn\u2019t dim the sparkle of its shopping centres<\/strong> and commercial areas either. This is Lima of great deals and the famous three Bs<\/strong>: bueno, bonito y barato<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 good stuff, good-looking and affordable. Surprised? Didn\u2019t know that? No one had told you? Patience. Before I reveal the best places for a shopping tour in the capital<\/strong>, let me ask you a few questions: What are you looking for? What do you need \u2014 clothes, technology, perhaps little souvenirs and handicrafts?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dress Yourself in Gamarra<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019d like to dress in garments truly made in Peru<\/strong>\u2026 if you want to find everything from underwear to evening gowns\u2026 if you\u2019re happy to spend hours upon hours browsing shops and galleries<\/strong>, then Gamarra is the place for you<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This fashion powerhouse, located in the lively and popular district of La Victoria District, became firmly established as a stronghold of tailoring and design back in the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet its roots go even further back<\/a>. At the end of the 19th century and the dawn of the 20th, the first textile factories<\/strong> began operating along Jir\u00f3n Gamarra and nearby avenues such as today\u2019s Aviaci\u00f3n and 28 de Julio. In the 1950s, the arrival of migrants from different regions of the country gave fresh energy to commercial life in \u201cRica Vicky\u201d<\/strong>, the affectionate nickname locals use for this Lima district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through sheer hard work and determination, generations of entrepreneurs built what is now the largest textile and clothing hub in Peru<\/strong> \u2014 and in South America. Gamarra\u2019s garments travel well beyond national borders, reaching markets across the continent. The secret to its success? Constant innovation \u2014 you\u2019ll find the latest fashion trends in its galleries \u2014 long-lasting quality, and an excellent balance between price and value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you fancy refreshing your wardrobe mid-journey,<\/strong> slip away to this fashion hub in La Victoria District. It\u2019s located less than 5 km from Lima\u2019s Historic Centre<\/a> and around 9 km from Parque Kennedy in Miraflores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The L\u00ednea 1 del Metro de Lima will drop you just a short walk from your destination \u2014 simply get off at Gamarra station. For convenience, check the official website<\/a> for up-to-date information about services on Lima\u2019s so-called electric train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a more comfortable visit, explore the \u201cDamero de Gamarra\u201d (Gamarra\u2019s grid of streets) in the morning<\/strong> or early afternoon. I wouldn\u2019t recommend going in the evening<\/strong>, nor carrying large amounts of cash (cards and other payment methods are widely accepted). Among the \u201csea\u201d of shopping galleries, a few stand out: El Rey, San Pedro, GAMA Moda Plaza, Santa Luc\u00eda, La Quinta and the C\u00e1nepa shopping centre \u2014 where you can also enjoy the hearty flavours of 7 Sopas<\/em> Restaurant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polvos Azules: Where You\u2019ll Find a Bit of Everything<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1981, the historic centre of Lima was overrun by street vendors<\/strong> selling everything from food to household appliances. Faced with this chaotic situation, the city\u2019s mayor at the time, Eduardo Orrego, relocated the traders to a simple fairground<\/strong> set up on an open esplanade near the R\u00edmac River and the Government Palace<\/a>. Today, that very spot is known as the Alameda Chabuca Granda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fairground was named Polvos Azules<\/a> \u2014 a name that dates back to colonial times. In that area of old Lima, goat leather was dyed with indigo<\/strong>, a fine blue powder. Historical records tell us that in 1574 the Spaniard Gaspar de los Reyes<\/strong> was a pioneer of this trade. Although the relocated vendors had nothing to do with leather dyeing, the old name has endured to this day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it has survived despite the fact that the original fairground no longer exists<\/strong>. In 1997, a devastating fire reduced one of the city\u2019s most emblematic shopping areas to ashes. It had been famous because you could find just about anything there<\/strong>: clothes and trainers from international brands (some genuine, others less so<\/strong>), the latest technology \u2014 televisions, cameras, mobile phones \u2014 as well as perfumes, spirits, and plenty of pirated films<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the tragic fire, the traders regrouped and built the new Polvos Azules<\/strong> on blocks 2 and 3 of Paseo de la Rep\u00fablica, in La Victoria District. This major avenue links the Historic Centre with San Isidro District, Miraflores District and Barranco Distric<\/strong>t, among other areas. Its central location and easy access \u2014 simply hop on a bus from the Metropolitano<\/a> \u2014 make it a very appealing stop on your shopping tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take your time wandering through all the passages of \u201cPolvos\u201d. You\u2019ll be amazed at the variety of products<\/strong> on offer at highly competitive prices. And there\u2019s more: if your laptop, tablet, mobile phone or camera happens to break down during your trip, the shopping centre\u2019s technicians will usually find a way to fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you head out, though, here\u2019s a friendly tip: don\u2019t be overly trusting<\/strong>. Make sure you know exactly what you\u2019re buying \u2014 you wouldn\u2019t want to pay for one thing and end up with another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shopping in Miraflores District and Barranco District<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re staying in Miraflores District, San Isidro District or Barranco District and would like to buy a truly Peruvian souvenir<\/strong>, there\u2019s no need to head all the way to the Historic Centre or to the \u201cIndian markets\u201d along Avenida La Marina in Pueblo Libre District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A short walk from Parque Kennedy or Parque Central<\/a> is all it takes to \u201close\u201d yourself in the colour and creativity<\/strong> of galleries and specialist shops devoted to traditional folk art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between blocks 52 and 55 of Avenida Petit Thouars, you\u2019ll find the Bulevar Artesanal de Miraflores<\/strong>. According to local sources, this artisan boulevard brings together 14 galleries and more than 1,500 craftspeople<\/strong>. As you stroll through in Miraflores<\/a>, you\u2019ll see \u2014 and be able to purchase \u2014 beautifully crafted wooden carvings, textiles, ceramics, intricately engraved mates burilados, jewellery, silverwork, traditional retablos and many other dazzling handmade pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If handicrafts aren\u2019t your only interest, make your way to Larcomar<\/strong>. Opened on 27 November 1998, it has become one of Lima\u2019s most recognisable tourist and shopping icons<\/strong>. Built dramatically into a seaside cliff<\/strong>, it boasts sweeping views over Lima Bay. With its exclusive shops, cinemas, restaurants and caf\u00e9s, it\u2019s a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy a relaxed day out overlooking the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not far from Larcomar<\/a>, in the bohemian district of Barranco District<\/a>, you\u2019ll find a whole string of art galleries<\/strong> waiting to be explored. If you\u2019re a collector or simply curious about new creative trends, I\u2019d recommend visiting D\u00e9dalo, arte y artesan\u00eda<\/em><\/a>, Wu Galer\u00eda, the cultural centre Cholo Terco<\/em><\/a>, and Artesanos Don Bosco<\/em><\/a>, where you can admire the work of young people who learned their craft in the workshops of Operaci\u00f3n Mato Grosso<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lima is a city for shopping and good prices<\/strong> because, as we said at the beginning, in my homeland you\u2019ll find a bit of everything. It\u2019s simply a matter of exploring the many faces of a metropolis inhabited by more than ten million people<\/strong> \u2014 some born here, others arriving from the coast, the Andes or the Amazon. That multicultural fusion is what gives the \u201cCity of Kings\u201d its unique and incomparable character \u2014 a city where, despite its name, no king ever lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
