Beyond <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/blog\/\">Cusco<\/a> and Lima, beyond <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/from-cusco-to-the-sea-a-getaway-to-the-pacific\/\">Arequipa <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/puno-aventuras-en-el-lago-titicaca\/\">Puno<\/a>, beyond the sacred Apu Ausangate and the lush forests of <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/manu-adventure-in-the-peruvian-amazon\/\">Manu<\/a>, <strong>the country treasures countless cities, villages and communities<\/strong> that will surprise you with their archaeological past, breathtaking scenery, deep-rooted traditions and <strong>vibrant living culture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most \u2013 if not all \u2013 of the popular landmarks will no doubt feature on your travel itinerary. The real challenge is <strong>to journey to an emerging or often-overlooked destination<\/strong>. Go on, slip away to a <strong>hidden village<\/strong> with ancient roots; immerse yourself in <strong>the joy of a traditional festival<\/strong>; wander along trails leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/en\/rupac-limas-city-of-fire-in-lima\/\">pre-Hispanic <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/en\/rupac-limas-city-of-fire-in-lima\/\">llaqtas<\/a> <\/em>far from the crowds, or to pristine natural landscapes that have preserved their purity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be bold enough to <strong>explore beyond the conventional<\/strong>, even if only for a couple of days. I\u2019m not about to suggest that you skip Peru\u2019s iconic attractions \u2014 such as <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/machu-picchu-visit-the-inca-llaqta-in-record-time\/\">Machu Picchu<\/a>, the Colca Canyon, the <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/en\/lima-journey-by-sea-and-through-the-coastal-desert\/\">Paracas National Reserve<\/a>, or Lake Titicaca, among others. No, never. The purpose of this text is quite different. What I truly mean is this: give yourself the time to <strong>venture along new and lesser-travelled routes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_20260110_162905.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_20260110_162905.webp 765w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_20260110_162905-300x226.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s so much waiting to be discovered along the coastal strip \u2014 I\u2019m thinking of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ytuqueplanes.com\/blog-viajero\/ancash\/playas-de-huarmey-las-mejores-actividades-marinas-para-disfrutar-del-sol-y-el-mar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the beaches of Huarmey in \u00c1ncash<\/a> \u2014 in the Central Highlands \u2014 I can just picture you dancing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dehuancayo.com\/calendario-de-huancayo-y-valle-del-mantaro.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mantaro Valley<\/a> and <strong>honouring the Christ Child<\/strong> in the streets of Hu\u00e1nuco \u2014 in the jungle where mountains rise and waterfalls tumble \u2014 step by step towards the spectacular <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=2191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Gocta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=5882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Yumbilla<\/a> Falls in Amazonas \u2014 and also within the <strong>native communities of the Lowland Amazon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What do you think? Tempting, isn\u2019t it? <strong>Would you dare to tweak your holiday plans just a little?<\/strong> I\u2019m not here to persuade you. I simply want to share my <strong>latest journey to Hu\u00e1nuco<\/strong>, so you can see for yourself that I\u2019m neither exaggerating nor romanticising. After all, one must practise what one preaches \u2014 and if I\u2019m inviting you to go beyond the usual, I ought to do the same. So, just for today, <strong>let\u2019s set aside Lima and Cusco<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hu\u00e1nuco, the city of the <em>\u201cpata amarilla\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_20260106_122440.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_20260106_122440.webp 765w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_20260106_122440-300x226.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps you\u2019ve never read anything about Hu\u00e1nuco, the city of the \u201c<strong>best climate in the world<\/strong>\u201d, where the \u201c<strong>longest Christmas on the planet<\/strong>\u201d is celebrated \u2014 or so every proud &#8220;<em><strong>pata amarilla<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; will tell you without hesitation. That\u2019s the affectionate nickname given to those born in this sun-drenched land, <strong>set at 1,880 metres above sea level and 360 kilometres northeast of Lima<\/strong>. From the capital, you can get there either by road (around 10 hours) or by air (just 50 minutes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biografiasyvidas.com\/biografia\/c\/caceres_andres.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Marshal Andr\u00e9s A. C\u00e1ceres<\/a>, known as the \u201c<strong>Brujo de los Andes<\/strong>\u201d, who noticed that the feet \u2014 or rather the footwear \u2014 of the Hu\u00e1nuco volunteers joining the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grau.pe\/campana-terrestre\/andres-avelino-caceres-y-la-campana-de-la-brena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Campaign of the Bre\u00f1a<\/a> were stained with <strong>the yellow clay dust of their homeland<\/strong>. Those brave men, like so many other Peruvians from the Central Highlands, became <strong>the last stronghold of resistance<\/strong> against the Chilean invaders during the <a href=\"https:\/\/historiaperuana.pe\/periodo-independiente\/republica\/guerra-peru-chile-del-pacifico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">War of the Pacific<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nickname lives on to this day and is worn with pride by the sons and daughters of the \u201c<strong><em>La Muy Noble y Leal Ciudad de los Caballeros de Le\u00f3n de Hu\u00e1nuco<\/em><\/strong>\u201d, originally founded in the Pampa de Hu\u00e1nuco \u2014 also known as Hu\u00e1nuco Viejo \u2014 by Pedro G\u00f3mez de Alvarado y Contreras on <strong>15 August 1539<\/strong>. At the time, the Spanish commander could hardly have imagined that a series of circumstances would soon <strong>force the young city to be relocated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_20260106_091016.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_20260106_091016.webp 765w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_20260106_091016-300x226.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through overconfidence \u2014 or perhaps simple lack of knowledge \u2014 Pedro G\u00f3mez de Alvarado y Contreras <strong>failed to foresee the Inca resistance<\/strong> led by Illathupa. The place where the Iberians chose to settle was, in fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/ahora.com.pe\/huanuco-pampa-la-capital-del-chinchaysuyo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the capital of Chinchaysuyo<\/a>, one of the four great regions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/americanindian.si.edu\/inkaroad\/engineering\/es\/activity\/los-cuatro-suyus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tawantinsuyo<\/a>. This magnificent <em>llaqta<\/em> of the \u201cChildren of the Sun\u201d is now one of the main attractions of the district of La Uni\u00f3n, in the province of Dos de Mayo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hostility from the local population, combined with an unforgiving climate and an altitude of 3,650 metres above sea level, led to the first relocation \u2014 or mudanza \u2014 to the Pillco Valley, along the Huallaga River, in 1541. Two years later, <strong>civil wars among the conquistadors<\/strong> forced a <strong>definitive move to the city\u2019s present site.<\/strong> The refounding took place on 2 February 1543, carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/historia-hispanica.rah.es\/biografias\/37599-pedro-de-puelles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Captain Pedro de Puelles<\/a>, who would later become corregidor of Hu\u00e1nuco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A region that will surprise you<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_0642.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_0642.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_0642-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_0642-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_0642-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hu\u00e1nuco is the capital of the region that shares its name<\/strong> \u2014 and across its 11 provinces, there is an extraordinary amount to explore. Earlier, we mentioned Dos de Mayo, home to the archaeological complex of Hu\u00e1nuco Pampa. Here you\u2019ll find <strong>monumental Inca architecture far from Cusco<\/strong>, the imperial city to which it was once connected by the <a href=\"https:\/\/qhapaqnan.cultura.pe\/que-es\"><em>Qhapaq \u00d1an<\/em><\/a>, the remarkable road network that the Incas laid across their vast territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Built in the second half of the 15th century<\/strong> by order of T\u00fapac Yupanqui \u2014 the tenth ruler of the empire \u2014 the capital of Chinchaysuyo once featured \u201c<strong>around 4,000 structures grouped into eight sectors<\/strong>, laid out along streets and walled passageways\u201d, as described in the <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tourism Resources Inventory<\/a> of Peru\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, a change of scene. Step even further back in time at the Cave of the <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=4915\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fourteen Windows in Lauricocha<\/a> Province. In these shadowy cavities, near a striking highland lagoon at 4,050 metres above sea level, the <a href=\"https:\/\/tudiariohuanuco.pe\/especiales\/augusto-cardich-in-memoriam-al-descubridor-del-hombre-de-lauricocha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">anthropologist Augusto Cardich<\/a> discovered <strong>11 human skeletons<\/strong> in 1958 \u2014 seven adults and four children. Once studied, <strong>they revealed something truly astonishing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC2064.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC2064.webp 864w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC2064-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC2064-768x512.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lauricocha, four hours from the regional capital, was once hailed as the \u201c<strong>Cradle of the Oldest Man in the Americas<\/strong>\u201d. The reason? Studies revealed that the remains were approximately 10,000 years old \u2014 <strong>a genuine journey back to the very seeds of civilisation<\/strong>. That experience continues at <a href=\"https:\/\/andina.pe\/agencia\/noticia-kotosh-y-templo-las-manos-cruzadas-un-misterio-andino-develar-e-investigar-960045.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the Temple of the Crossed Hands of Kotosh<\/a> and among the Yarowilca \u201cskyscrapers\u201d of the district of Tantamayo, in Huamal\u00edes Province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kotosh, just six kilometres from the centre of Hu\u00e1nuco, is <strong>one of the oldest temples in Peru and in the Americas<\/strong> (around 1800 BC). Between 1958 and 1963, Japanese archaeologists uncovered <strong>two pairs of clay hands here, symbolising the Andean concept of duality<\/strong>. And there is more. Other destinations. Other strongholds of the past: remarkable stone-and-mud buildings rising up to <strong>five storeys high<\/strong>, constructed between the 10th and 14th centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hu\u00e1nuco: from history to nature<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_0387.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_0387.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_0387-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_0387-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_0387-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look up \u2014 always look up \u2014 to admire <a href=\"https:\/\/larepublica.pe\/datos-lr\/2024\/05\/27\/huanuco-por-que-un-lugar-de-peru-es-conocido-como-los-rascacielos-de-america-se-edifico-hace-11-siglos-evat-2287899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the legacy of the Yarowilcas<\/a>, <strong>a pre-Inca culture that flourished in the Central Ande<\/strong>s. Skilled architects, <strong>they built true \u201cskyscrapers\u201d that served urban<\/strong>, military, religious and administrative purposes. The so-called Castillo de Susupillo, with its five storeys and 16 rooms, is <strong>the tallest pre-Hispanic building<\/strong> in this part of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such is the significance of Hu\u00e1nuco\u2019s attractions \u2014 so <strong>why not venture along its roads<\/strong>, which lead not only to archaeological sites? Its striking geography invites you to <strong>challenge yourself on high-altitude trails<\/strong> along the slopes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cordillera_Huayhuash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Cordillera Huayhuash<\/a> (Lauricocha Province), and also to <strong>explore the cloud forests of the high jungle<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.pe\/institucion\/sernanp\/informes-publicaciones\/1949442-parque-nacional-tingo-maria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tingo Mar\u00eda National Park<\/a> (Leoncio Prado Province).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renowned for the beauty of its snow-capped peaks and turquoise lagoons, the Cordillera Huayhuash \u2014 a mountain chain shared with the regions of Lima and \u00c1ncash \u2014 is an <strong>unmissable destination for keen walkers<\/strong>. Here, beyond the long distances, the harsh climate and the demanding routes, <strong>every step feels like a triumph<\/strong>, and every view of the range is both a reward for your effort and <strong>an encouragement to keep going<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_8090.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_8090.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_8090-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_8090-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC_8090-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the cold and dazzling whiteness of snow to the warmth and <strong>lush greenery of Tingo Mar\u00eda National Park<\/strong> \u2014 a protected area that shelters <strong>291 species of birds<\/strong>, 76 mammals and around 650 types of plants. I<strong>t\u2019s a true haven of life<\/strong>, just three hours by car from the city of the \u201cCaballeros de Le\u00f3n\u201d. Along the way,<strong> you\u2019ll clearly notice the dramatic shift<\/strong> in landscape as you pass through the now-legendary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/peru\/2025\/06\/09\/el-tunel-que-conecta-la-sierra-con-la-selva-central-del-peru-y-guarda-nichos-incrustados-en-sus-paredes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Carpish Tunnel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hope you can now see why it\u2019s worth seeking out new destinations. <strong>Peru has far too much to offer<\/strong> to stay on the well-trodden path.
