If there were an official list of activities or experiences that every traveller must try in Peru, the number one spot would, without a doubt, go to a visit to Machu Picchu<\/strong>. After all, the Inca citadel is one of those places you simply have to see at least once in your lifetime \u2014 and if you get the chance to go more than once, even better<\/strong>! As people like to say these days, with a touch of drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this imaginary list that I\u2019m cheerfully trying to put together, I\u2019d include a good day of hiking along a stretch<\/strong> of the Qhapaq \u00d1an <\/a>(the Great Inca Road), climbing to a mountain viewpoint<\/a> to watch the majestic flight of the condor<\/strong>, and respectfully taking part in an Andean ritual with coca leaves<\/strong> and a little sip to toast the earth and the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And since we Peruvians absolutely love it when visitors try our food, it\u2019s essential that you order a spicy cevichito<\/strong>, taste one or several types of chicha (purple corn, de jora, or de molle), and celebrate your holiday with a glass of pisco<\/strong>, our national drink. But that\u2019s not all. If you\u2019re up for a challenge, have breakfast or lunch at a local market<\/strong> and dare to try \u2014 from the paws to the head \u2014 a delicious fried guinea pig (cuy)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What else? Ah, yes \u2014 in \u201cthese lands of the Inca that the sun lights because God commands it,\u201d as the beloved Peruvian song Y se llama Per\u00fa<\/a><\/em> goes, it\u2019s practically a priority \u2014 perhaps even a duty \u2014 to take a selfie with a llama or an alpaca<\/strong>. And if you\u2019re lucky (and patient), you might even manage one with a small herd of vicu\u00f1as<\/strong> \u2014 the elegant South American camelids with soft white and cinnamon-coloured fleece that appear on Peru\u2019s national coat of arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a tip: if you want to see plenty of vicu\u00f1as \u2014 naturally shy and elusive animals \u2014 venture into the high Andean plains during the chaccu<\/strong>, the ancestral ceremony where wild camelids are gently rounded up and shorn for their prized fibre. This colourful event, in which hundreds of people form a human chain<\/strong>, takes place in several parts of the country, including a district in the Lima region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lima, full of surprises<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes, Lima \u2014 that Lima that never fails to surprise you. The Lima that is so much more than just a metropolis<\/strong>. The Lima that is, in fact, an entire region<\/a> with beautiful beaches, inter-Andean valleys, pampas covered in ichu grass, and mountain ranges crowned with snow. In the city and its surroundings, you can tick off several of the activities mentioned in this unofficial list of things to do in Peru<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still not convinced? Well, let me tell you that in this \u201ccheerful, lively and festive Lima<\/strong>, thrice crowned land where the marinera was born\u201d \u2014 if you\u2019ll allow me to \u201csing\u201d another traditional peruvian music<\/a>\u2014 you can enjoy almost all the experiences I\u2019ve mentioned: from hikes along the Qhapaq \u00d1an<\/strong> (there are several sections across its provinces), to delicious and daring culinary adventures<\/strong>, not to mention encounters with Andean wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ah, my mistake \u2014 I should have said almost all of them<\/strong>. The real Machu Picchu<\/a> is, of course, in Cusco, the \u201cnavel of the world\u201d. But if you don\u2019t mind the idea, visit Lima\u2019s own \u201cMachu Picchu<\/strong>\u201d, as the \u201cCity of Fire\u201d of Rupac<\/a> is often called. Built high on a mountain by the Atavillos \u2014 a pre-Hispanic kingdom \u2014 its stone tombs (chullpas) and the sea of clouds<\/strong> that drifts over this highland sanctuary will surely take your breath away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not the only option. In 2019, married couple Luis Grados and Sandra Barojas came up with the idea of building a citadel in the Inca style<\/strong> in the district of Buenaventura (Canta province). Gran Imperio de Guaya<\/a> was the name they chose for their monumental project. That\u2019s its official name, although most people know it as \u201cLima\u2019s Machu Picchu\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These things happen. Well then, I\u2019d better stop thinking about the Inca wonder \u2014the real one and the alternatives\u2014 and focus on the vicu\u00f1as of the district of Gorgor<\/strong> (Cajatambo province). Graceful, elegant, slender and authentic \u2014unlike the stones of Guaya\u2014 I saw them up close, really close, during the annual shearing festival. In Search of Lima\u2019s Vicu\u00f1as<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t part of my plans. In fact, when I left home I had no idea that a vicu\u00f1a chaccu was taking place in Gorgor<\/strong>, one of the five districts of the Cajatambo<\/a> province. My goal on that journey was to explore the trails of a section of the Huayhuash mountain range<\/a> and get closer to Yerupaj\u00e1<\/strong>, Peru\u2019s second-highest peak (6635 m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re passionate about trekking, you\u2019ll know that the Huayhuash circuit is a true temptation<\/strong> for hikers from all over the world. In another story I\u2019ll tell you about my experiences in this impressive chain of snow-capped mountains stretching across the regions of Lima, \u00c1ncash and Hu\u00e1nuco. For now, I\u2019ll just say that\u2014beyond the effort and the fatigue\u2014every moment and every step is a wonderful adventure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exhausted but satisfied, I returned to the town of Cajatambo after several days of wandering between lagoons and majestic glaciers wounded by global warming<\/strong>. My plan was to recover my strength before heading back to Lima (distance: 296 km), until I happened to hear that a vicu\u00f1a chaccu would be taking place in the highlands of Gorgor (distance: 61 km; travel time: approx. 2 hours from Cajatambo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Needless to say, my plans changed. I was going to the shearing festival <\/strong>\u2014a celebration I already knew, one I had experienced before in the Pampa Galeras B\u00e1rbara D\u2019Achille National Reserve<\/a> (Lucanas, Ayacucho)\u2014 and one I was keen to witness in a different place, to confirm that the recovery of the vicu\u00f1a, a species once on the brink of extinction<\/a>, was a miraculous reality in the country with the largest population of these camelids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many, many years, poaching<\/strong> dramatically decimated this wild species that brings such beauty to the highland plains. Those deadly bullets fed the illegal trade<\/strong> of one of the most coveted fibres in the fashion world. Once outside Peru, the fleeces were transformed into extremely fine and expensive garments<\/strong>. Those were the stages of a neat, profitable<\/strong> \u2014and deeply harmful\u2014 business<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Chaccu<\/em> in the Highlands<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A day of festivity and celebration in July. A day for the community, a day of shared effort<\/strong>. A day of longing and ancestral memories. The chaccu is a pre-Hispanic tradition<\/a> that faded when the spectre of extinction<\/strong> wandered across the Andes. In Inca times, the Vicugna vicugna<\/em> \u2014that\u2019s the scientific name of this high-altitude mammal\u2014 was respected and protected. Anyone who harmed them faced severe punishment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But on that morning and afternoon that still lives in my memory, there were no reprimands or punishments. Only anticipation, excitement and plenty of chatter in a landscape \u201cwatched over\u201d by a chain of snow-wrapped mountains. \u201cThey\u2019re close now<\/strong>. They\u2019ll be here any moment<\/strong>,\u201d the community members said, referring to their fellow villagers who formed the links of a colourful human chain. Together \u2014all together\u2014 they would guide the animals towards the area where they would be shorn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVicu\u00f1a shorn, vicu\u00f1a saved<\/a>,\u201d declared a representative of the Regional Government of Lima that day, on the plains of Yanahuair\u00e1n and Huachaj<\/strong>, an area belonging to Cochas Paca (3400 m a.s.l.), a small community 15 kilometres from the main town of Gorgor. It was in that quiet, remote place that I felt like just another local farmer, because during the chaccu, every pair of hands counts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s just part of what I experienced on that unexpected July day in the highlands of Lima \u2014a destination you simply can\u2019t, and shouldn\u2019t, overlook<\/strong>. And although many more things happened under Gorgor\u2019s clear blue sky, I can\u2019t quite find the words to describe them accurately. You\u2019d have to be there to understand <\/strong>and to feel that the heart of original Peru still beats strongly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From past to present. During the 2025 chacchu, \u201c364 vicu\u00f1as were captured and 169 were shorn<\/strong>, highlighting the balance between sustainable use and conservation<\/strong>,\u201d according to a report<\/a> from the Regional Directorate of Agriculture of Lima. The tradition remains alive. The teachings of the ancients were never forgotten<\/strong>. They had merely been asleep among the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
