In winter, when the fog takes firm hold <\/strong>of the skies over greater Lima, travellers and tourists set off on adventurous escapes towards the inter-Andean valleys near the capital<\/strong>. There, among mountains, farmland and peaceful little towns, they find refuge from the city\u2019s noise<\/strong>, rush and tension \u2014 and are blessed by the sun that hides from them back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nature, fresh air and gentle warmth<\/strong> await in a series of seasonal getaways just outside the Peruvian capital<\/a>. From April to October, people of Lima forget about the beaches<\/strong> to the north and south \u2014 too cold, too misty, too little sunshine. All the more reason to head towards Chaclacayo, Chosica, and the many small towns scattered across the Santa Eulalia valley and the province of Huarochir\u00ed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These aren\u2019t the only places to relax and unwind. At weekends, entire families, groups of friends and solo travellers leave the city behind. They make their way to Cieneguilla and Antioquia<\/strong> in the Lur\u00edn valley; to Azpitia <\/strong>in the Mala valley; and to Santa Rosa de Quives, Yangas and Canta<\/strong> in the Chill\u00f3n valley \u2014 among other enticing destinations that all share the same starting point: the \u201cCity of Kings\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A delicious tourist menu <\/strong>that I\u2019ll be serving to you little by little in this space \u2014 so you can see for yourself that in Lima<\/a>, both the city and its provinces<\/a>, there\u2019s far more to explore than you might imagine. Don\u2019t believe those who claim that the old town \u2014with its colonial and republican architecture\u2014, the cosmopolitan flair of Miraflores<\/strong> and San Isidro, and the cultural, bohemian nights of Barranco<\/a> are the only things worth seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s simply not true. There\u2019s so much more in both urban and rural Lima<\/strong> \u2014 from nearby beaches perfect for surfing to a collection of museums<\/strong> with extraordinary exhibitions; from a park where fountains leap and dance<\/a> to high-Andean lagoons guarded by snow-capped peaks<\/strong>; from archaeological sites hidden in modern neighbourhoods to ancestral rituals in honour of Mother Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A nearby and accessible destination<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere should I go this weekend?\u201d I ask myself whenever routine starts to weigh me down. And where should you head during your stay in Lima? <\/strong>Ah, it\u2019s hard to choose where to go; even harder to decide which place to recommend<\/strong> for your itinerary. I think, I focus, I start to write\u2026 Stop! You\u2019re making a list \u2014 that\u2019s not the way. Focus on just one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change of direction, change of strategy. Pause, take a deep breath, and start again: In winter, when the fog becomes an unbreakable curtain in the skies over greater Lima, travellers and tourists set off towards Callahuanca<\/strong> (1,765 m a.s.l.), a farming village with a springlike climate<\/strong>, nestled in an inter-Andean valley in Huarochir\u00ed \u2014 one of the ten provinces of the Lima region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There we go \u2014 first step done. I\u2019ll write about Santa Rosa de Callahuanca<\/strong>, a splash of green among the mountains on the right bank of the Santa Eulalia River valley<\/strong>. Thanks to its proximity to the capital, this \u201csplit stone\u201d (that\u2019s what its name means in English)<\/strong> is a truly tempting destination \u2014 as tempting as the delicious cherimoyas, avocados<\/a> and apples grown and harvested in its fertile fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve found the route. I keep writing, and we keep travelling. Let\u2019s move on to the second step: how to get there from Lima<\/strong>?. If you don\u2019t have your own transport, hop on one of the \u201cChosicanos\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 the public buses that head towards Lurigancho\u2013Chosica<\/a>. Along the way, they travel down Avenida Alfonso Ugarte, Paseo Col\u00f3n, V\u00eda Expresa Grau, and the Santa Anita roundabout, among other main roads in the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Chosica, get off at Echenique Park<\/strong> and walk to the stop where cars leave for Callahuanca (about 50 metres away). The road is paved<\/strong>, and along the route you\u2019ll pass through the villages of Palle and Barbablanca, as well as the Juan Carosio hydroelectric plant. The journey includes a winding uphill stretch, and the landscapes will take your breath away. Total distance: 68 km<\/strong>. Travel time: 2 hours 30 minutes-<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chirimoya: the white delicacy of the Andes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chirimoya<\/a> \u2014 don\u2019t forget that name. You\u2019ll hear it often, even before you reach Callahuanca<\/a>. Once you arrive, you\u2019ll see them everywhere<\/strong> \u2014 so much so that even the tourist information signs feature a cartoon image of this fruit, native to the inter-Andean valleys<\/strong>. It\u2019s the symbol, the pride, and the main agricultural product<\/strong> of \u201cthe split stone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve never tried one, this is your moment.<\/strong> And if you already have and loved it, remember \u2014 pleasure comes with repetition, and here that pleasure will be greater than anywhere else in Peru. The reason? You\u2019ve arrived at The Paradise of Cherimoyas.<\/strong> The Annona cherimola Miller<\/em> \u2014 that\u2019s its scientific name \u2014 grown by Callahuanca\u2019s farmers are huge, incredibly sweet and deliciously creamy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter the time of year, you can always enjoy this \u201cwhite delicacy\u201d<\/strong>, as the Spanish conquistadors called it \u2014 a fruit that \u201cgrew and was consumed along both the northern and central coasts<\/strong>, from times before the introduction of pottery right through to the Inca period,\u201d according to the Andean Foods Series<\/a> of the El Brujo Archaeological Complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The article mentions that \u201cthe renowned archaeologist Duccio Bonavia and his colleagues suggest that the chirimoya is native to Ecuador and Peru.<\/strong>\u201d Depicted on Moche ceramics, this \u201ccold seed\u201d \u2014 the translation of its Quechua name \u2014 was part of the ancient diet<\/a>, valued as a \u201csource of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fibre, and water.\u201d It was also used for medicinal purposes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Round or oval, with white flesh and black seeds<\/strong>, these delights grow on the chirimoya tree<\/strong> \u2014 a plant that can reach up to 10 metres in height and thrives between 1,500 and 2,000 metres above sea level.<\/strong> The best harvest season runs from April to June, although in Callahuanca they\u2019re never in short supply. You can enjoy them fresh, or in ice cream, jams, yoghurts and juices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A glimpse of the valley and the mountains<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Time for a quick pause and an important announcement: Callahuanca isn\u2019t just about Chirimoyas<\/strong>\u2026 but before I wander off track, let me tell you that every April the town holds a festival<\/strong> in honour of the delicacy that once conquered the conquerors. The celebration coincides with the anniversary of the district\u2019s political creation, which took place on 12 April 1957.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before that date, this destination was considered an Indigenous community<\/strong> \u2014 a status granted back in July 1711. So now you know: this is a place of history, delicious fruit and excellent cuisine \u2014 fancy a pachamanca<\/a> or some fried trout? You\u2019ll also find stunning views of the valley, the fields and the mountains<\/strong>. Just follow a steep little trail for about two hours to reach the Charac\u00e1n viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your effort will be worth it \u2014 I promise. Your eyes will be captivated<\/strong> by the beauty of the landscape. It\u2019s a magical moment. When you reach the top, take a deep breath and let yourself be embraced<\/strong> by the peace that still dwells in these highlands. That calm, that stillness, will connect you with nature<\/strong> in a deep and special way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in the heart of town \u2014 small, old, and quiet \u2014 where even the simple act of sitting on a bench<\/strong> in the square or strolling through the church courtyard becomes a delightful experience. Live it! You\u2019ll only need a day (if your schedule is tight), and you won\u2019t have to venture far from Lima<\/strong> \u2014 the city that welcomes and bids farewell to most travellers visiting Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about it. Plan a getaway to Callahuanca<\/strong> or to any of the other villages scattered across the inter-Andean valleys<\/a>. Each one is unique and unforgettable<\/strong>. Who knows \u2014 you might even change your plans and end up visiting more than one<\/strong> during your stay in my homeland. Well, it\u2019s just a friendly suggestion<\/strong> for those days when the winter fog becomes an unbreakable blanket over the capital\u2019s sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
