Rush hour. Congestion. Roads jammed. Buses packed. What to do? Go out or wait until the city calms down a bit<\/strong>. Lima<\/a>, why are you like this? So much traffic<\/strong>, so much restlessness, so much coming and going along your main streets and avenues. What happened to you? You used to be quieter<\/strong> and more peaceful. I remember it well \u2014 I\u2019ve known you for over five decades. Yes, you\u2019ve changed. We\u2019ve changed you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re no longer the serene city<\/a> shown in old photographs, in images from another time. Back then, you were far from being a metropolis<\/strong> of over ten million people. In the second half of the 20th century, you grew faster than ever before in your long history. The cancer of centralism and the terrorist violence of the 1980s and 90s turned you into a refuge for thousands of citizens<\/strong> from all over the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explosive growth, poor urban planning, and the ineptitude of the authorities gave rise to a series of problems we still haven\u2019t been able to solve. Traffic chaos<\/a>, environmental pollution, shrinking green spaces, lack of basic services in many neighbourhoods, and a worrying security crisis are the everyday troubles<\/strong> we Lime\u00f1os face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Ah, I\u2019m sorry, my dear Lima \u2014 I\u2019d love to say you\u2019re the best city on the planet<\/strong>. But you\u2019re not, even though the charm of your colonial and republican architecture<\/strong> shows that you once had better days \u2014 times of splendour and an easier pace of life. Well, perhaps it was all just appearances. Appearances that deceive, much like now. Because behind all the chaos, there\u2019s so much to discover<\/strong> in Peru\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Believe me, it\u2019s worth exploring the so-called \u201cCity of Kings\u201d<\/strong>, because beyond its problems and shortcomings, it\u2019s a vibrant<\/strong>, diverse, colourful, and delicious destination \u2014 thanks to its exquisite cuisine. And so you can truly enjoy your time in my city, I\u2019ll share a few local secrets with you<\/strong> \u2014 insights that will help you navigate and overcome the urban challenges of the \u201cThrice Crowned Villa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting Around Lima<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Lesson 1:<\/em> Don\u2019t travel during rush hour<\/strong>. Don\u2019t forget this. If you do, you\u2019ll become a hostage of Lima\u2019s traffic<\/strong> \u2014 a hostage psychologically tortured by the constant blaring of horns, a hostage who, before even getting on the bus, will be pushed, squeezed, and jostled<\/strong> by a wave of desperate passengers racing against the clock, all determined to take your spot and leave you stranded at the stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alright, I might be exaggerating a bit \u2014 but only so you understand that during rush hour<\/a>, it\u2019s best to avoid taxis, shared cars, combis, c\u00fasters, buses, mototaxis, and even the carriages of the electric train. So, between 6:00 and 9:00 in the morning, and 17:00 and 20:00<\/strong> in the evening, stay at your accommodation or walk to a nearby attraction. Also keep in mind that drivers and pedestrians aren\u2019t exactly friendly<\/strong> when traffic gets heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson 2:<\/em> Avoid street taxis, shared cars, and unlicensed combis<\/strong>. Here\u2019s why: in my city, there\u2019s an entire \u201cparallel\u201d transport system<\/strong> \u2014 vehicles that operate without official registration. In theory, they\u2019re illegal, but in practice, they circulate freely. This disorder is taken advantage of by criminals<\/strong> who pose as drivers to carry out all sorts of misdeeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Lesson 3:<\/em> Cycling is an option<\/strong>, but\u2026 be very careful. There aren\u2019t many cycle lanes<\/strong>, and drivers aren\u2019t exactly friendly towards two-wheeled vehicles. If you\u2019ve got nerves of steel<\/strong> and experience riding in busy urban areas, go ahead and pedal. In the end, arguing with drivers can\u2019t be worse than dealing with the impatient passengers pushing through the queues for the Metropolitano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safe traveller<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Lesson 1<\/em>: Stay alert \u2014 always alert<\/strong>. Never let your guard down. The city isn\u2019t a paradise<\/a> of peace and harmony, so a healthy dose of suspicion and caution is your best ally<\/strong>. That doesn\u2019t mean walking around scared or paranoid \u2014 the key is simply to avoid dangerous areas<\/strong>, dark streets, and deserted spots. Before heading out, ask at your accommodation whether your destination is considered safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson 2:<\/em> Don\u2019t make yourself an easy target<\/strong>. Urban experience \u2014 and survival \u2014 teaches that it\u2019s unwise to display valuables in busy or unsafe areas<\/strong>. For instance, if you have an expensive phone<\/strong>, avoid answering calls or messages in public places where you don\u2019t feel confident. If you must answer, keep the conversation short<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This advice applies to all your belongings. Other ways of \u201cgiving yourself away\u201d include leaving a backpack pocket open<\/strong> or your things unattended on a restaurant chair or elsewhere. It\u2019s also unwise to keep your wallet somewhere easy to reach<\/strong> (pickpockets are very skilled) or to show that you\u2019re carrying a lot of cash \u2014 criminals have sharp ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson 3: <\/em>Less is more<\/strong>. Don\u2019t go out carrying all your money or credit cards. It\u2019s also not a great idea to wear expensive jewellery or watches. Leave your accommodation with only what\u2019s essential <\/strong>\u2014 just enough to enjoy the many attractions of the \u201cCity of Kings.\u201d That way, you won\u2019t stand out as a potential target for thieves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson 4:<\/em> Don\u2019t be fooled<\/strong>. Scammers often target tourists. If someone approaches you offering a service or an incredible deal, be very cautious. There have been plenty of cases where travellers have been tricked in various ways<\/strong>. Never hand over money or share your personal details with a stranger, no matter how tragic or moving their story sounds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson 1:<\/em> Don\u2019t drink the water<\/strong>. Follow this old saying to the letter during your stay in Lima<\/a>. It\u2019s well known that drinking unboiled water can cause stomach troubles for travellers<\/strong> \u2014 something that happens in cities all over the world, and our capital is no exception. Be cautious and stick to bottled drinks<\/strong>. Your body will thank you for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson 2:<\/em> Copies can save the day<\/strong>. Make sure you have photocopies of your ID documents<\/strong> and keep them separate from the originals. In case of theft, they\u2019ll serve as a backup<\/strong> and make official procedures much easier. Another good idea is to upload digital copies to the internet<\/strong>, so you can access them from anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson 3:<\/em> A little goes a long way<\/strong>. Keep this in mind when eating. Lima is one of the world\u2019s great culinary capitals<\/a>, and in its restaurants, huariques <\/a>(local eateries), and street food stalls, you\u2019ll be tempted to try a bit of everything \u2014 and then some. Don\u2019t overdo it. Be cautious. Overindulging at breakfast, lunch, or dinner can easily upset your stomach.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So don\u2019t go overboard with the ceviche<\/strong>, causa rellena, or lomo saltado. And don\u2019t make that same mistake with chilcanos<\/a> or pisco sours \u2014 though that\u2019s a topic for another time. Because in Lima, beyond the sometimes hellish traffic and the occasional mischief of a few wrongdoers, there\u2019s always a reason to raise a glass and enjoy life<\/strong>. Yes, that\u2019s part of its charm \u2014 and one of the reasons I\u2019m still here, writing about both the good and the not-so-good sides of a city you simply have to experience<\/strong>.
