Frozen waters resting on the slopes of a snowy peak. Steaming waters pooling in a thermal spring. Calm waters in lagoons that mirror the sky<\/strong>. Waters that feed rivers and irrigate the fields. Waters that bring beauty to the landscape. Waters that relax and heal, in a destination of mountains, plains and ravines<\/strong>, with llamas, alpacas and vicu\u00f1as, with high-altitude routes and trails that few people know and almost no one ever walks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTourists don\u2019t make it up here<\/strong>. They always stay down below, always further down,\u201d says my seatmate on the bus that\u2019s taking us away from Lima<\/a>, the capital of Peru, along the Panamericana Norte highway. His words hit me like a missile. I\u2019m a traveller who has never reached his district<\/strong> \u2014 perhaps out of ignorance, or maybe from the comfort of staying below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this time will be different. Today, I\u2019ll go all the way to the final stop<\/strong> of the interprovincial bus<\/strong>, which has already turned off the Panamericana and left the Pacific coast behind. The road climbs higher. The landscape begins to change, little by little<\/strong>. The hills grow tall and powerful, the road narrows, twists, bends. Even the air smells different \u2014 the scent of countryside, the scent of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to visit your homeland<\/strong>. It\u2019ll be my first time,\u201d I tell my temporary travel companion. He smiles. \u201cIt won\u2019t be your last,\u201d he replies with complete certainty<\/strong>. \u201cYou\u2019ll have a great time,\u201d he adds enthusiastically \u2014 so enthusiastically that, without my asking, he begins to plan my itinerary. He then lists one place after another that I must see in the \u201cCradle of the Harp<\/strong>\u201d and the \u201cCoal and Silver Capital of Peru<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s how they refer to the town of Oy\u00f3n<\/strong> (3,620 m a.s.l.), capital of the province and district of the same name in Lima Provinces<\/a>. That\u2019s my destination<\/strong> \u2014 a place which, despite its splendid natural scenery and its proximity to the \u201cCity of Kings\u201d (Distance: approx. 250 km, around 4 hours on a paved road), is often overlooked by tourism operators<\/strong> and independent travellers alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A stop in Chur\u00edn<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFamilies<\/strong>, groups of friends, and couples in love come here every weekend<\/strong>. And during long holidays, the streets turn into a bustling hive of people<\/strong>. Lots of visitors head straight for the baths,\u201d my seatmate tells me as the bus stops in Chur\u00edn<\/strong> (Pachangara district, Oy\u00f3n province) \u2014 a paradise of thermal medicinal waters<\/a> at 2,258 m a.s.l.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stop takes a while. It\u2019s Saturday and most passengers get off here. Only a few of us will continue on to Oy\u00f3n (just one more hour along the road). That\u2019s usually how it goes. I know it, and I get it. I was once one of those tourists looking to unwind in the pools and hot springs of Mamahuarmi, La Juventud, the Twin Pools and La Meseta, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The waters rise from deep underground<\/strong>. They filter through fractures in the rocks, with the Chim\u00fa aquifer being the main source of these \u201cthermal and mineral springs, which are historically renowned as an energetic and wellness destination<\/strong>. The positive effects of the local mineral waters on the human body are undeniable and have been used since ancient times<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My seatmate didn\u2019t tell me any of that. I found it out in a document from the virtual repository<\/a> of the Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (Ingemmet). That wasn\u2019t the only discovery I made online. I also learned that the sulphated and bicarbonated waters (which can reach temperatures of up to 70\u00b0C<\/strong>) are highly recommended for visitors suffering from rheumatic, respiratory, and nervous conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, my friend, I won\u2019t lie to you. Chur\u00edn is a fantastic place to disconnect and enjoy yourself<\/strong> \u2014 not only thanks to its thermal baths but also its scenery,\u201d I say as the engine roars back to life. My companion takes no offence. He knows I\u2019m telling the truth, but he is utterly convinced that his hometown is even more appealing<\/strong>. \u201cWe have hot springs in Oy\u00f3n, too,\u201d he says. \u201cSo get ready for a proper splash<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oy\u00f3n: first steps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Slopes and bends mark the final stretch of a journey that begins at various stops in central and northern Lima. Buses to Oy\u00f3n depart every day <\/strong>at different times, and the fare is around 30 soles<\/strong> (approximately 8 US dollars). If you\u2019d like more details, visit the website of the transport company Internacional Cruzero Express<\/a>, where you can also purchase your tickets online<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep in mind that travel agencies and tour operators don\u2019t offer regular departures to the \u201cCradle of the Harp\u201d, so you\u2019ll need to organise this adventure on your own<\/strong>. In Oy\u00f3n, you\u2019ll find more than one option for an overnight stay. Just note that there are no luxury or high-star hotels<\/strong>. The same goes for restaurants \u2014 they\u2019re simple, but they get the job done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main challenge \u2014although don\u2019t worry, there\u2019s an easy fix\u2014 is arranging outings to the main attractions<\/strong>. I recommend stopping by the Tourist Information Office at the Town Square (Plaza de Armas), where they\u2019ll explain the possible routes and, if needed, put you in touch with a reliable taxi driver<\/strong> who can take you to the most interesting spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey comes to an end<\/strong>. It\u2019s time to say goodbye. \u201cBrother, you\u2019ll want to come back<\/strong>. When that happens, you\u2019ll remember me,\u201d my seatmate insists, repeating his prediction as he shakes my hand and gives me directions to reach the centre of Oy\u00f3n<\/a>, not far from the bus terminal. I walk slowly. I breathe deeply. I\u2019m cautious \u2014 I don\u2019t want to tempt altitude sickness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experience teaches us well. In the highlands, you must take things easy<\/strong> until your body adjusts to the altitude. You shouldn\u2019t eat too much either, and greasy dishes are best avoided. Be careful <\/strong>with your first lunch and first dinner \u2014 digestion takes longer<\/strong> up here. Enough advice. I\u2019m already in the centre, in the main square, standing before the church. The adventure begins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring the routes of Oy\u00f3n<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Make the most of the time. Follow the advice of my travel companion. Head to the main square and then up to the viewpoint<\/strong>. A panoramic scene: clear skies with no hint of rain<\/strong>, a ring of mountains, and a small but charming town below. Step out, explore, and set off towards the blue-green waters of Lake Pat\u00f3n<\/strong> (4,085 m a.s.l.). Immensity, grandeur, reflection. A moment to pay tribute to Mamapacha and the Apus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A full-on outing<\/strong>. I return to the vehicle I boarded in the town centre. From Oy\u00f3n \u2014 named after the Spanish soldier \u00c1lvaro de Oy\u00f3n<\/strong>, who arrived in these lands in 1533 \u2014 to Pat\u00f3n, and from Pat\u00f3n onwards to A\u00f1il Cocha. Another lagoon<\/strong>. More blue waters<\/strong> on the road that leads to the Plomo Pampa mining camp and the Nazareno mountain range, the natural barrier dividing Lima Provinces from the Pasco region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More trips, more places. Wild vicu\u00f1as and queu\u00f1a forests<\/strong> around Cochaquillo, a lagoon at 4,420 m a.s.l. Mountain trails and frozen waters at Mount Jimena<\/strong> (5,200 m a.s.l.), one of the peaks of the Raura range<\/a>. Is that all? I recall my seatmate once again. He spoke of ancient Inca pathways, of abandoned coal mines<\/strong>, and of the breathtaking Lake Surasaca<\/strong> (4,397 m a.s.l.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wasn\u2019t lying. Surasaca, just 6 kilometres from the community of Quiches<\/strong> (north of Oy\u00f3n), is a stunning mirror of water. Here, the cold and the altitude simply don\u2019t matter<\/strong>. The beauty of the landscape, crowned by the peaks of the Huayhuash range<\/a>, is enough to warm both body and soul.<\/strong> From this spot, you can walk all the way to Lake Viconga (an 8 km round trip). Go on \u2014 put your fitness to the test!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another challenge on foot is the climb up to Quillahuaca, a pre-Hispanic archaeological site<\/strong>. After such effort, it\u2019s not a bad idea to listen to the harpists of Oy\u00f3n<\/a> \u2014 so renowned that the district is known as the \u201cCradle of the Harp\u201d<\/strong>. Before returning to Lima, take a dip in the pools or hot springs of V\u00edroc<\/strong>. \u201cIf you do, you\u2019ll never want to stop in Chur\u00edn again.\u201d Oh dear, now I\u2019m starting to sound just like my seatmate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
