Nor were they covered in lush, <strong>tangled vegetation like the biodiverse mountains<\/strong> of the cloud forests or the high jungle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quite the opposite. <strong>Their slopes were dry and barren<\/strong>. Their only charm lay in their closeness to the ocean\u2019s edge. And it wasn\u2019t that their location was especially extraordinary or privileged \u2014 the coast has many rocky, sandy watchpoints \u2014 but somehow, places near <strong>the beaches and waves of the Pacific<\/strong> always have a certain magic about them. Perhaps it\u2019s because <strong>life is sweeter by the sea?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t know \u2014 just as no one knew for a very, very long time that those \u201chills\u201d \u2014 without snow, without greenery, not very tall and seemingly unremarkable \u2014 <strong>weren\u2019t hills at all,<\/strong> even though everyone believed they were. Why would they have doubted it? <strong>They weren\u2019t a mirage or an optical illusion<\/strong>. Not at all. Since the time of their grandparents, those mounds had stood there, facing the sea on <strong>the plain of Bandurria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_115817.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2884\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_115817.webp 765w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_115817-300x226.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sorry, let me correct myself \u2014 those \u201chills\u201d are still there, and everyone can still see them, though now they know they aren\u2019t hills at all, but <strong>pre-Hispanic pyramids built thousands of years ago<\/strong>. This truth began to unfold in April 1973, when a flood transformed the <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/from-cusco-to-the-sea-a-getaway-to-the-pacific\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coastal landscape<\/a> of Para\u00edso de Playa Chica in Huacho (province of Huaura), an archaeological site \u2014 and a bit more \u2014 located 143 km north of <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/en\/\">Lima<\/a>, the capital of Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, now that it\u2019s known those unremarkable hills were never hills, it\u2019s an excellent idea to <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/en\/from-lima-to-callao-crossing-the-chalaco-sea\/\">leave Lima<\/a> and <strong>visit the monumental archaeological site of Bandurria<\/strong> \u2014 yet another reminder that in Peru, appearances can be deceiving when it comes to ancient history and cultural heritage. So much so that what once seemed like simple mounds turned out to be<strong> a thousand-year-old treasure<\/strong> that brings you closer to <strong>the dawn of Andean civilisation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Fortunate Discovery<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_120754.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2887\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_120754.webp 765w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_120754-300x226.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It wasn\u2019t an archaeologist<\/strong> with an Indiana Jones look who discovered the pre-Inca site of Bandurria. <strong>It wasn\u2019t a scientific expedition<\/strong> organised to \u201cunearth\u201d the architectural legacy of a civilisation that emerged 5,000 years ago. <strong>Nor was it the lucky<\/strong> find of an enthusiastic university professor and their young students during a field project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t even the <a href=\"https:\/\/pecadosdelarte.com\/noticia\/373\/expertos\/que-es-un-huaquero.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">huaqueros<\/a> \u2014as <strong>the looters of ancient treasures<\/strong> are called in Peru. The first person to realise that something important was hidden along the Huacho coast was an engineer named Domingo Torero Fern\u00e1ndez C\u00f3rdova. His \u201cdiscovery\u201d came about through an unexpected event that caused great concern: <strong>the overflowing of the Santa Rosa irrigation canal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The force of the water revealed <strong>a large number of ancient materials<\/strong>. When he saw them, he suspected that these remains might belong to <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourcusco.org\/en\/five-reasons-to-know-peru\/\">Peru<\/a>\u2019s cultural heritage. With the help of his father, he quickly gathered a group of neighbours and students, and together they s<strong>et out to protect what the flood had uncovered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0243.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2889\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0243.webp 866w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0243-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0243-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0243-550x365.webp 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That moment marked the beginning of the recovery of the pyramids, <strong>sunken plazas<\/strong>, and <strong>circular dwellings<\/strong> on the Pampa de las Bandurrias \u2014named after the ibises (bandurrias) that inhabit the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=3368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">El Para\u00edso<\/a> wetland. Just a few steps from the pre-Hispanic site, this body of water is <strong>home to 125 bird species<\/strong> \u2014both resident and migratory\u2014 as well as <strong>five species of fish and two of reptiles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But let\u2019s not \u201cfly\u201d too far from the subject and instead \u201cland\u201d on the archaeological side of things. The first person to study the site was <strong>Dr. Rosa Fung, whose findings were astonishing<\/strong>: the waters of Santa Rosa had performed <strong>a miracle by uncovering<\/strong> a precious legacy from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aula-media.net.pe\/2021\/10\/como-fue-el-preceramico-tardio-en-el.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Late Preceramic Period<\/a>. Later, in 2005, a project led by Alejandro Chu Barrera revealed the existence of <strong>four stepped pyramids<\/strong>, confirming that this seemingly barren land was, in fact, one of the earliest urban centres on the Peruvian coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Journey of Five Thousand Years<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_120251.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2891\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_120251.webp 765w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_120251-300x226.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey thought they were hills,\u201d explains the local guide as he points towards one of <a href=\"https:\/\/consultasenlinea.mincetur.gob.pe\/fichaInventario\/index.aspx?cod_Ficha=3369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bandurria<\/a>\u2019s<strong> pyramids, built from river stones and mud mortar<\/strong>. This ancient <strong>fishing village<\/strong>, covering around 20 hectares, is believed to have been inhabited between <strong>4000 and 2000 BC<\/strong>. In its monumental zone, researchers discovered what are considered <strong>the earliest examples of ceremonial<\/strong> stone architecture in the Andes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During that time, <strong>fishing and the gathering of shellfish<\/strong> ensured the community\u2019s survival. Blessed by <strong>a rich and generous sea<\/strong>, the settlement grew and flourished, transforming into a <strong>centre of political and religious power<\/strong>. Its circular plazas, dwellings, temples, and the imposing <strong>pyramids\u2014some reaching up to 12 metres high<\/strong>\u2014stand as silent witnesses of that greatness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A greatness that goes far <strong>beyond tourism<\/strong>. Due to its remarkable age (5,000 years), <strong>there is ongoing debate<\/strong> over whether Bandurria <strong>predates<\/strong>, coincides with, or <strong>postdates the Sacred City<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zonacaral.gob.pe\/caralperu\/civilizacion\/ciudadsagradadecaral.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Caral<\/a> in the Supe Valley (Barranca province), which is recognised as one of the <strong>cradles of civilisation on Earth<\/strong>. From there, <strong>it\u2019s a two-kilometre walk<\/strong> along a clearly marked path, so you won\u2019t get lost. <strong>Entrance costs 7 soles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This fee includes a guided tour through both the monumental and domestic areas of the archaeological zone. <strong>The site is in excellent condition<\/strong>, thanks to the protection and care of the <strong>Asociaci\u00f3n Pro Defensa Bandurria\u2013Para\u00edso<\/strong>. At the end of your visit, you\u2019ll reach <strong>the viewpoint overlooking the Para\u00edso wetland<\/strong>, right beside the sea. History and nature, culture and biodiversity \u2014 <strong>all beautifully intertwined in one unforgettable destination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Birds in Paradise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_122330.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2895\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_122330.webp 765w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_122330-300x226.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>El Para\u00edso has two sections<\/strong> \u2014 not a biblical truth, but a fact easily confirmed in Huacho. This coastal wetland is made <strong>up of two main bodies of brackish water<\/strong>, their levels influenced by the tides and by seepage from the Santa Rosa irrigation canal, built in the mid-20th century and responsible for the fortunate overflow of 1973.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Various studies have shown that the existence of the wetland <strong>made life easier for the ancient inhabitants<\/strong>. Its waters provided them with food and <strong>useful plants such as totora reeds<\/strong>, still used today in many ways (at the end of your visit, you\u2019ll see handicrafts made from this versatile plant fibre). These natural resources allowed people <strong>to settle along the coast<\/strong> and develop their civilisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a special interest in birdwatching, stay a little longer at the viewpoint. With some luck \u2014 and a bit of patience \u2014 <strong>you might spot grebes, gulls, vermilion flycatchers, pelicans, and herons<\/strong>, among other species. And even if birdlife isn\u2019t your thing, you\u2019ll still enjoy the scenery. After all, it\u2019s not every day you come across<strong> a lagoon bringing life and freshness to the coastal sands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_124658.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_124658.webp 765w, https:\/\/freewalkingtourslima.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20250418_124658-300x226.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only that. Think about it \u2014 you\u2019re looking at the very same landscape once seen by the men and women who, 5,000 years ago, built the<a href=\"https:\/\/andina.pe\/agencia\/noticia-bandurria-albergo-civilizacion-mas-antigua-america-sostienen-especialistas-169956.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> pyramids and enclosures of Bandurria<\/a>. <strong>Ancient visions, filled with echoes of the past<\/strong>, that will transport you to a world that no longer exists.<strong> Everything is different now<\/strong>, yet here, a fragment of that long-buried history has been preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, because <strong>those pyramids weren\u2019t just hills<\/strong> whose only charm was their closeness to the sea. That\u2019s what everyone believed.
