But those aren\u2019t the only ones. Peru\u2019s capital has many faces<\/strong>: it\u2019s pre-Hispanic in its archaeological sites like Pachacamac<\/a> and Huaca Pucllana; it\u2019s memory, art and culture in its magnificent museums<\/strong>; it\u2019s vibrant nightlife and sleepless celebration in its bohemian neighbourhoods<\/a>; it\u2019s a promise of the future for the countless migrants from every region<\/strong> who have found \u2014 and continue to find \u2014 a home in its 43 districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lima is not just a big city<\/a>. Lima is also a department \u2014 a region made up of ten provinces. A vast and fascinating land that stretches from sea to mountains<\/strong>, valleys to high ranges, from ancient civilisations to explosive biodiversity<\/strong>. A string of destinations waiting to be discovered. A promising adventure<\/strong> through adobe cities, coastal fishing villages, rural towns, waterfalls and lagoons, towering mountains and snow-capped peaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to travel thousands of years<\/strong> back in time to connect with the deepest roots of Andean culture, visit Caral, the Sacred City<\/strong>; \u00c1spero, a fishing town; Pe\u00f1ico, a meeting point between the coast and the highlands; and Vichama, an agro-fishing city<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step back 5,000 years along the Caral Route<\/a>, an archaeological adventure that will take you to \u201cthe oldest urban centres in the Americas<\/strong>, where cultural remains have been recovered and the knowledge that gave rise to Andean civilisation<\/strong> has been revealed \u2014 a process that endured until the Inca Empire\u201d, as stated on the official website of this archaeological project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sacred City, brought to light in 1997 by Dr Ruth Shady<\/a>, was the capital of the first civilisation in the Americas<\/strong>. According to the Caral Route website, this civilisation \u201cemerged in the north-central region of Peru 5,000 years ago, between 3000 and 1800 BC.\u201d In this time capsule in Barranca province (207 km north of Lima), you\u2019ll find pyramids, plazas, temples, houses and workshops built from adobe and stone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caral \u2014located in the Supe Valley\u2014 is one of the cradles of civilisation on the planet<\/strong>. In this remarkable landscape, 25 associated urban centres have been identified<\/strong>. \u00c1spero<\/a> (at km 191 of the Pan-American Highway North, in the province of Barranca), a fishing settlement with seven stepped pyramidal structures<\/strong>, and Pe\u00f1ico<\/a> (34 km from Caral, also in Barranca), where Andean and coastal peoples once met and exchanged, are part of a monumental legacy that will truly amaze you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The route also includes the agro-fishing city of Vichama<\/a> (in the district of V\u00e9gueta, province of Huaura) \u2014 a place blessed with fertile seas<\/strong> and productive valleys, just 162 km north of Lima. Here, five imposing pyramidal buildings<\/strong> reveal the grandeur of a culture whose discovery reshaped our understanding of Andean development. Such is the significance of the archaeological treasures found across Lima\u2019s provinces<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sea of fun<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you love the sea, escape to the fishing coves<\/strong> and alluring beaches of Ca\u00f1ete, Huaral, Huaura and Barranca \u2014 the coastal provinces of Lima<\/strong>. Just outside the metropolis, you can enjoy sand and surf<\/strong>, sea breeze and sunsets, relaxation and rest \u2014 both in the ocean and in seaside restaurants serving the very best of Peru\u2019s ocean-inspired cuisine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounters with the Pacific await you north of the capital. Follow your compass along the Pan-American Highway North, and the sea of Chancay<\/strong> (in the province of Huaral) will greet you at Chacra y Mar beach<\/a> (km 75, at the end of the Pasamayo bypass). In this lively seaside spot<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find the Eco Truly Park \u2014 a self-sustaining Krishna community<\/strong> where peace and spirituality fill the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that same feeling of harmony and calm, you\u2019ll reach El Para\u00edso<\/a> \u2014 and no, it\u2019s not Adam and Eve\u2019s Eden<\/strong>, but one of the most popular coastal destinations in Huacho, the capital of Huaura province<\/strong> (around km 135 of the Pan-American Highway). Its gentle waves, wide shores and nearby wetlands<\/strong> \u2014 home to a variety of bird species \u2014 more than justify its name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a precaution, don\u2019t eat any apples<\/strong> during your stay \u2014 you wouldn\u2019t want to be expelled like in the biblical story, though in this case, it wouldn\u2019t be such a terrible punishment. That\u2019s because, a bit further north, you\u2019ll find the Barranca beach circuit<\/strong> (between km 173 and 193 of the Pan-American Highway), featuring spots like Quitacalz\u00f3n, Caleta Vidal, La Isla and \u00c1spero<\/strong>, among others. When it\u2019s time to eat, make sure to order a hearty tacu tacu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farewell to the north \u2014 time for a change of direction. Leave Lima city via the Pan-American Highway South towards the province of Ca\u00f1ete, where you can surf and go birdwatching at Puerto Viejo<\/strong> (km 70); enjoy the modern seaside resort of Asia<\/strong> (km 100); and buy fresh fish<\/strong> straight from the small pier at Cerro Azul<\/a> (km 131). Then, head back to the \u201cCity of Kings\u201d already thinking about your next escape. Are you heading to the mountains?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

High-altitude destinations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No mountains, snow or high altitudes in Lima? Well, that\u2019s both true and false<\/strong>. The city itself lies on the coast, but the region is home to places thousands of metres above sea level<\/strong> \u2014 perfect for hiking along mountain slopes<\/strong>, cycling on narrow, dusty trails, camping beside tranquil lagoons, and even taking part in traditional earth-offering ceremonies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the highland side of Lima<\/strong> \u2014 where you might feel the effects of altitude, where ichu grass covers the hills and hail sometimes falls, where offerings are made to the Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the Apus<\/a> (sacred mountain spirits) of the La Viuda<\/a> (in the province of Canta), Raura (Oy\u00f3n) and Huayhuash (Cajatambo) ranges \u2014 the last of which is shared with the regions of \u00c1ncash and Hu\u00e1nuco. Their trails form part of one of the most famous trekking routes in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huayhuash is<\/strong> both a dream<\/strong> and a challenge for mountain and trekking enthusiasts \u2014 long, demanding journeys through wild, uninhabited territory<\/strong>. It\u2019s just you and your footsteps climbing mountain passes that lead to majestic snow peaks, turquoise lagoons and simple campsites where the wind bites and the cold is intense.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ah, never mind. The landscape warms the soul<\/strong> and inspires you to keep walking through the mountain range where Yerupaj\u00e1 (6,634 m), Peru\u2019s second-highest peak<\/strong>, stands tall. The same magic can be felt in the highlands of the Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserv<\/a>e \u2014 a paradise of waterfalls<\/strong>, mirror-like lagoons, archaeological sites and traditional farming villages in the provinces of Yauyos (Lima) and Jauja (Jun\u00edn).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
