Good morning, afternoon or evening. Today I will introduce you to Lima<\/strong>, the city where I was born and where I still live. But before I continue, I want to warn you that this will be a different kind of story. I won\u2019t be writing about tourist routes and circuits<\/strong>\u2014be patient, that information will appear in other posts on this blog. I hope you enjoy this rather unusual welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lima seen through the eyes of a \u201clime\u00f1o mazamorrero\u201d<\/strong>. That\u2019s what we are called thanks to Ricardo Palma<\/a>, author of the Peruvian Traditions. He coined the phrase to highlight the fondness of the capital\u2019s inhabitants for \u201cmazamorra morada\u201d,<\/strong> a dessert made with purple corn<\/a>, a variety which, back in colonial times, was considered a mistake of nature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, Lima from the perspective of a \u201clime\u00f1o\u201d who, like so many others, is the child of migrants<\/strong> who came to the capital in search of a different future. This process transformed the serene colonial town into a metropolis that welcomes Peruvians from every region<\/strong>. That mixture is the origin of today\u2019s Lima\u2014the Lima of all cultures and colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe who doesn\u2019t have Inca blood has Mandinga blood\u201d<\/strong>, says a popular phrase of unknown origin that fits perfectly with the population I am part of. Here, there is a bit of everything. This diversity of origins and backgrounds, of cultures and traditions, makes our capital both a mosaic of the country<\/strong> and a cosmopolitan urban space<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One city, many cities. Pre-Hispanic and colonial Lima<\/strong>. Republican and modern Lima. Lima of churches, mansions and balconies. Provincial Lima. Lima that speaks Spanish and Quechua<\/strong>. Supportive and entrepreneurial Lima. Lima with its sea and its desert. Lima with its grey sky and scarce rains<\/strong>. Lima of gourmet flavours, of gastronomic fusion, of homely seasoning in its markets and huariques<\/a> (hidden local eateries).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lima, my place in the world<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I won\u2019t lie to you. I don\u2019t live in a paradise<\/strong>. My city has its problems and faces many difficulties, but despite these challenges, it is my place in the world<\/strong> \u2013 a place I feel proud of for what it was and for what it will become thanks to the efforts of all of us. That\u2019s why I invite you to visit. You\u2019ll see that you\u2019ll have a \u201cch\u00e9vere\u201d time<\/strong> (good time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means \u201creally good\u201d in the way we speak. Well, at least when I was young. Everything changes with time \u2013 even slang and our local expressions. It would be fun to take a tour of the way we communicate<\/strong>. That way, you\u2019d find out that we say pe\u2019 and pa<\/strong>\u2019 instead of pues and para<\/strong>, among other variations that are part of our essence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

City of exquisite flavors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to food, Lima really is a paradise. Our gastronomy is extraordinar<\/strong>y and, since we are right by the Pacific, it\u2019s a true feast to enjoy our marine delights \u2013 especially the famous ceviche<\/strong>. Ah, but you must eat it with plenty of aj\u00ed limo<\/a> so it burns right down to your soul<\/strong>. After all, every true lime\u00f1o \u2013 and every self-respecting tourist \u2013 knows that ceviche<\/a> that doesn\u2019t set your palate on fire isn\u2019t real ceviche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did I scare you? I\u2019m exaggerating. There are ceviches for every taste<\/strong>: from fiery ones reserved for the most seasoned diners to gentle ones, perfect for beginners learning to handle the chilli. But if you\u2019re someone who likes risks and challenges, then dare to test your resistance to spice<\/strong> with our national dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, it\u2019s not the only one in a city celebrated for the skill of its chefs<\/strong>. We lime\u00f1os love our food and we\u2019re convinced our cuisine is among the best in the world<\/strong>. So, don\u2019t even think about saying you didn\u2019t enjoy causa<\/strong>, lomo saltado, cau cau, arroz con pollo, aj\u00ed de gallina or carapulca, among many other dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do, you risk being declared persona non grata<\/strong> by 99 per cent of the population\u2026 Yes, I admit it, I\u2019m exaggerating again. Still, it\u2019s true that our gastronomy is a source of pride<\/strong>. In Lima, eating is a serious matter. We love to explore, experiment, share and invite others to try the flavours of our homes<\/strong> \u2013 even if it means throwing \u201cone more potato into the stew<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That way there\u2019s enough for everyone \u2013 and that\u2019s the essence of our cuisine. It\u2019s not just about preparing an exquisite dish or experimenting by fusing flavours and techniques. It\u2019s about sharing<\/strong>, connecting, talking and laughing around a table where there\u2019s always room for one more. Because where there\u2019s space for two, there\u2019s space for three<\/strong>, four, even five\u2026 There\u2019s space for us all!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lima, one destination, many attractions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even though Lima always has room for everyone, many travellers see the capital only as a stopover or an overnight stay<\/strong>. Their tourist expectations usually go no further than a quick tour of the Historic Centre<\/a> \u2013 a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong> \u2013 a short stroll to shop and admire the ocean from the Miraflores boulevards<\/strong>, or a liberating bohemian night in Barranco<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t make that mistake. Explore my city<\/strong>. Walk along its colonial and republican streets, wander through its pre-Hispanic archaeological sites<\/strong>, surf in the Pacific, find peace in its temples and churches, travel through history in the halls of its museums, feel the thrill of paragliding off a cliff<\/strong>, and enjoy anticuchos or a dish of picarones <\/strong>(Peruvian donuts) from a street cart.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you love birdwatching, visit the Los Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge<\/a>. If you\u2019d like to walk among desert greenery, head to the Lomas de L\u00facumo<\/a>. If religious art captivates you, the colonial cloisters will leave you spellbound<\/strong>; and if you\u2019d like to take part in one of the largest processions on the planet, join the faithful of the Se\u00f1or de los Milagros<\/strong> who \u201ctake over\u201d the city each October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lima in its natural state. Lima of faith. Lima of urban adventures<\/strong>: hop on the Metropolitano, the bus system that connects the capital from north to south; dance at a Peruvian cumbia concert<\/strong>; watch the national football team at the National Stadium or a classic derby between Universitario and Alianza Lima<\/a>; shop at Polvos Azules<\/strong>, a market where you\u2019ll find just about everything at good prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is so much to see and do in Lima that you might not believe it \u2013 and because I want you to believe me, I\u2019ll show you the many faces of the capital<\/strong>. You\u2019ll soon realise for yourself that we are a great destination<\/strong>, a vibrant metropolis, a city that keeps its traditions alive without giving up on modernity or globalisation. I\u2019ll be waiting to guide you through my land and raise a toast to \u201cour\u201d city<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
