Part of <strong>Francisco Pizarro\u2019s original design<\/strong>, this street has always been bustling, commercial, and vibrant since 1535.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On this street, you\u2019ll see a monument dedicated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/peru\/2024\/08\/29\/ramon-castilla-las-razones-por-las-que-es-considerado-el-mejor-presidente-de-la-historia-del-peru\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">great Marshal Ram\u00f3n Castilla<\/a> (1797-1867), who abolished slavery in Peru. Your guide will also share insights about the <strong>colonial church of Our Lady of La Merced<\/strong>, built in 1535 by Fray Miguel de Orenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the Heart of the Centre<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After exploring Jir\u00f3n de la Uni\u00f3n, you\u2019ll visit the Plaza de Armas, the site chosen by Pizarro <strong>to establish a city in the R\u00edmac Valley<\/strong> (known as \u201cthe talkative river\u201d in Spanish), and where General Don Jos\u00e9 de San Mart\u00edn <strong>proclaimed Peru&#8217;s independence<\/strong> on 28th July 1821.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the colonial era, the Plaza de Armas served <strong>as a market, a bullring, and even a site for executions <\/strong>carried out by the Inquisition. Here, you\u2019ll also learn about the bronze fountain inaugurated on 8th September 1651.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surrounding the Plaza de Armas are the Government Palace, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elartecristiano.com\/catedral-de-lima\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the Cathedral<\/a>, and the <strong>Municipal Palace.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the Presidential Palace, viceroys, liberators (Jos\u00e9 de San Mart\u00edn and Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar), <strong>dictators, and democratically elected presidents <\/strong>have governed Peru. The current palace was designed by architect Ricardo de Jaxa-Malachowski; c<strong>onstruction began in 1926<\/strong>, and it was inaugurated by President \u00d3scar R. Benavides in 1938. Its main fa\u00e7ade features a <strong>French neobaroque style<\/strong>, while the side fa\u00e7ade is neoplateresque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, the current Municipal Palace was completed in 1939, replacing a colonial building that served the same purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your next steps will take you to Pasaje Santa Rosa (adjacent to the Plaza de Armas), where you&#8217;ll find <strong>the monument to Taulichusco<\/strong>, the last chief of the R\u00edmac Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWanka in Granodiorite, <strong>Andean Basalt<\/strong>. A tribute from the city of Lima to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/america\/peru\/2022\/12\/01\/la-historia-detras-del-monumento-de-la-piedra-basal-andina-ubicada-en-el-centro-de-lima\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Taulichusco &#8216;The Old One,&#8217;<\/a> the last of its native rulers,\u201d is the message you\u2019ll read at this <strong>memorial to pre-Hispanic Lima<\/strong>, a metropolis that still preserves archaeological sites revealing its ancient past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll then walk to the small square and the convent and <a href=\"https:\/\/conventosantodomingo.pe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">church of Santo Domingo<\/a> (exterior visit), one of the most important colonial religious complexes in the Historic Centre, noted for its majestic architecture that <strong>combines baroque and neoclassical elements.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back to the Plaza<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, you\u2019ll walk from the remnants of a 16th-century convent (between Jir\u00f3n Conde de Superunda and Caman\u00e1) to the relaxing <strong>Chabuca Granda promenade<\/strong>, an ideal spot to <strong>view the R\u00edmac River<\/strong>, San Crist\u00f3bal Hill, the Desamparados train station, and other traditional spaces of the old city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This monument was constructed in 1998 on the site of the former Polvos Azules market, and the promenade is a tribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biografiasyvidas.com\/biografia\/g\/granda.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Chabuca Granda<\/a>, one of the country\u2019s greatest singer-songwriters. Here, along with lovely views, you can indulge in<strong> the flavours of Lima<\/strong>, one of the gastronomic capitals of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll then pass by <strong>the Aliaga House<\/strong> (Jir\u00f3n de la Uni\u00f3n 224), which dates back to 1536 and stands out for its eclectic style. It was the home of Captain Jer\u00f3nimo Aliaga, one of the first conquistadors to arrive in Lima in 1535.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spanish Streets and Mansions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After visiting the Plaza de Armas, you\u2019ll stop at the famous <strong>Casa del Oidor<\/strong>, built in the 16th century, featuring striking green balconies with small openings for family members to observe what was happening in the street. You\u2019ll also visit the<strong> Desamparados train station<\/strong>, inaugurated on 22nd September 1912. Today, it houses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casadelaliteratura.gob.pe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Casa de la Literatura Peruana<\/a>, located just a few metres from the Casa del Oidor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Stop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After visiting the train station, you\u2019ll take a short walk to<strong> La Muralla Park<\/strong>, where you can see <strong>the statue of the founder of Lima<\/strong>, Francisco Pizarro. There\u2019s an urban legend surrounding this<strong> monument that claims the equestrian figure is actually of Hern\u00e1n Cort\u00e9s<\/strong>, the conqueror of Mexico.
